Scope management is basically the process of defining exactly what the project is going to deliver. To start, be sure to speak to and collect requirements from everyone involved to make sure you are not missing anything important. This usually leads to a work breakdown structure which divides the project into manageable chunks. I think the WBS is the most helpful tool for organizing a complex project into something you can actually track. Essentially, it prevents people from feeling overwhelmed by the overall size of the project.

A good scope statement acts as a contract between the project team and the client. It needs to list what is included but also be very clear about what is part of the project and what’s not. I have seen projects fail because the boundaries were too blurry and everyone had different expectations. You should get a formal sign off on this document before any real work begins. This protects you from being blamed for things that were never part of what was originally planned.

Scope creep can also be a big issue where small requests slowly turn into a massive amount of extra work. It often starts with a simple ask from a stakeholder to just add one small feature. If you do not have a change control process these small additions will eventually destroy your budget and schedule. You have to be willing to say no or ask for more money and time when the scope changes. I feel that being firm about the scope is the only way to deliver a quality product on time.
